2005 Seppelt Bellfield Marsanne Roussanne

Image - Glenlofty The traditions of blending Marsanne and Roussanne hark back to France's Rhône Valley and the wines are a cornerstone of southern French white winemaking. Seppelt has championed these two varieties with this, the third vintage of the Bellfield Marsanne Roussanne.

The Marsanne grape originated in the Northern Rhône and is increasingly becoming a popular grape the world over (paradoxically, Victoria has some of the world's oldest Marsanne vineyards). It produces deep coloured, full flavoured wines with an intoxicating honeyed character and adds tremendous body when blended with the more aromatic Roussanne.

Roussanne is so called because of its russet coloured skin, and is not an easy grape to grow, it's delicate and prone to disease. It produces elegant wines with an almost ethereal aroma and when blended with Marsanne, adds finesse and aging capacity.

The 2005 Seppelt Bellfield Marsanne Roussanne is the third release of this wine from Seppelt and was sourced exclusively from the Glenlofty Vineyard in the Pyrenees. Whilst still relatively young, the Glenlofty vineyard was planted in 1995, it is already producing parcels of high quality fruit and the Marsanne and Roussanne offer exciting blending opportunities. The 2005 vintage was an exceptional year with little rain and warm and dry ripening conditions and produced rich honeysuckle flavours in Marsanne and spiced, almost green tea aromas in Roussanne, coupled with great natural acidity.

The resulting wine shows delicate orange blossom aromas with citrus notes and a touch of spice leading to a delicate palate of stone fruit, honeysuckle and spiced flavours. Parcels of this wine were aged for five months in old French oak which adds structure and a nutty complexity to the finish that melds beautifully with the bright, natural acidity. The wine while young is the perfect accompaniment to creamy fish dishes or spicy cuisine and will continue to develop classic aged characters with careful cellaring.

Look out for this 1 April released wine at fine wine retailers or contact the Seppelt Cellar Doors for more information.
