Seppelt Release Two Brand New Wines: Silverband, A Showcase of Quality and Elegance

From June 2007 you will have the opportunity to taste two new exciting Seppelt wines from the Grampians region, the 2005 Seppelt Silverband Grampians Shiraz and the Seppelt Silverband Sparkling Shiraz NV.

"These wines embrace the distinctive style of the Grampians and demonstrate the affinity between this region and Shiraz." Emma Wood, Seppelt Senior Winemaker.

Seppelt has a long tradition of producing wines with distinct regional origins, each with their own unique style and character, and continue with the release of two new premium wines from the Grampians: the 2005 Seppelt Silverband Shiraz; and the Seppelt Silverband Sparkling Shiraz NV.

GrampiansNamed after the picturesque and unique Silverband waterfalls in Victoria's Grampians, the Seppelt Silverband wines reflect the region's unique terroir, renowned for producing fine, wines of superior quality and elegance. The Grampians offer the perfect climate for viticulture with the mountain range offering not only a stunning backdrop to the region, but also lower average temperatures than the Central Victorian regions to the east. It is the combination of this climate and the region's soils that produces wines with a rich depth of flavour, balanced by a refined elegance. It is this balance of elegance and intensity that sets Grampians' wines apart from Victoria's heavier, warm climate styles.

Emma Wood, Seppelt Senior Winemaker, said, "These wines are a reflection of the cool climate region from which they are sourced. They embrace the distinctive style of the Grampians and demonstrate the affinity between this region and Shiraz. Our winemaking team is focused on producing balanced, elegant wines that remain regionally and varietally expressive but without excessive alcohol or use of oak."

"Like the Silverband falls these Shiraz wines are sourced from unique viticultural meso-climates that were formed from the gradual weathering of the Grampians over millions of years. These quality vineyards were identified by the winemakers and were fermented and aged separately. From these parcels, careful selection based on wine quality and regional fruit expression was employed to create two unique products displaying fruit purity, elegance and great ageing capacity, classic characteristics of the Grampians region."

The two new Seppelt Silverband wines are:

Seppelt Silverband Grampians ShirazThe Seppelt Silverband Grampians Sparkling Shiraz NV is composed of select tirage wine parcels with an average age of six years. These parcels were initially trial lots, carefully selected by the winemakers with the promise of the ability to age gracefully and develop intense varietal and regional characters. Over time, these batches were identified and blended to craft this unique and delightful sparkling red wine.

Emma describes this wine as intense russet red in the glass with a classic Shiraz nose with aromas of pepper, spice, leather and cigar box. The palate is rich, full-bodied and flavoursome with a well-integrated balance of complex, mature components, married with fresh, vibrant youthful parcels. The result is a classic, non-vintage sparkling wine with excellent, savoury bottle age characters.

Seppelt Silverband Grampians ShirazThe 2005 Seppelt Silverband Grampians Shiraz was created to fully display the unique character of the Grampians. In 2005 the region saw a cool, wet spring, extremes of weather in February before a cool summer and perfect autumn that allowed for the fruit to slowly reach maturity. Winemakers identified desirable fruit parcels from their vineyards which were then fermented and aged separately. From these batches, only the wines that best expressed the regional fruit characters were selected and blended. Crimson in the glass, with vibrant purple hues, the nose is perfumed with notes of dark cherry and berry fruits supported by aromas of mocha and spice.

Emma says the palate shows intense, regional fruit characters, combined with refined, suede like tannins that flow across the full length of the wine. This is a unique Shiraz that displays purity of fruit, elegance and great aging capacity; classic characters of the Grampians region.

These wines will be available nationally in good restaurants, at selected Victorian fine wine retailers and at the Seppelt Cellar Doors at Great Western and Seppeltsfield.
