Grampians

The Grampians is a region of spectacular natural beauty in the heartland of Victorian wine country, 260km north west of Melbourne.

Gold Rush roots

The Grampians has a cool, dry climate with cold nights, where vines benefit from a long, slow ripening season. Soils consist of free draining, grey sands and richer loams over red brown clay broken up by shale. This combination produces delicate, intensely flavoured shiraz with compelling fragrance and spice.

The region’s viticultural tradition dates to the 1850s gold rush, and ranks among the oldest continuously producing wine districts in Australia.

Great Western & St. Peters Vineyard

Seppelt Great Western winery lies in the centre of the Grampians region and is the birthplace of Australia’s celebrated sparkling red wine style. More than 600ha of vineyard are set against a panoramic backdrop of craggy peaks, gorges and waterfalls which make up the Grampians Mountain Range.

The vineyard also includes 105ha of super-premium, cool climate shiraz ranging in elevation from 240m to 330m. The fruit from this vineyard is destined for the St Peter’s, Show Sparkling Shiraz and Chalambar wines. The historic Seppelt St. Peters Vineyard was first established here in 1863.

Our Grampians vineyard was re-planted in 1962 with a special shiraz clone - the building block of our wines today. Our flagship shiraz shows signature spice and perfume for which the region is renowned.
