Henty

Henty is among the coolest and southern most wine regions in mainland Australia, located 300kms west of Melbourne.

Maritime cool climate

Swept by the chilly Antarctic winds, Henty stretches from the prime merino and cattle country of the Western Victorian hinterland.

Winemaking in the region began with the arrival of the Henty brothers in 1834, who brought the first wine cuttings to what would later become Victoria, and one year before the foundation of Melbourne.

Cold and overcast for much of the year, Henty’s maritime influence protects vines from frost. Soils in the region vary from fertile black volcanic to red-brown clay. Henty region wines are known for being elegant, well-balanced and with fine natural acidity. In particular, the region is known for its aromatic white wines, sweet desert wines and intense red wines.

Seppelt Drumborg Vineyard Henty Australia
Drumborg Vineyard

Seppelt pioneered cool climate viticulture in Australia with the establishment of the Drumborg Vineyard at Henty in 1964, the region’s first commercial vineyard. This ground-breaking vineyard was planted with the purpose of providing high quality sparkling wine grapes.

Early sparkling varieties of Ondenc, Sylvaner and Chasselas eventually were replaced with classic Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier varieties.

Our original planting of Seppelt Drumborg Riesling still survives, and is revered for its great finesse and longevity. Our Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier enjoy reputations as some of Australia's finest cool climate, single vineyard wines.
